Chasing the Moon
A pocket painting: Chasing the Moon

As a child we had a duckling and it imprinted with my Mother and her dog. Everywhere we went, the Duck came too. It slept in a box by my mothers bed, escaping in the early hours to snuggle into her hair, leaving a disgusting mess in the morning. We called her Petunia, always romantics, but Petunia turned out to be a drake and as she thought she was a dog she/he became besotted by the terrier. Sadly, the Duck in Petunia was stronger than the dog and he stayed out late in the moonlight and came to a sorry end.

Living a short but adventurous life, Petunia was the main attraction in a hotel that mum worked in for a summer. Yes, dog, child and duck decamped to Ballymacmoy Country house. He became drunk one night trying all the drinks that people placed beside them on the floor and was the main joke when people ordered Duck. He would be brought along on a sliver salver by the proprieter to to the horrified guests.
